What outdoor tiling costs in Adelaide
Unlike a bathroom, outdoor areas are usually priced per square metre because they tend to be larger open spaces. The rate depends heavily on the tile, the surface underneath and how much fall and drainage is needed. As a guide:

These are indicative ranges that assume a sound, level slab. If the tiler has to level the surface, build up falls or waterproof first, that is added on top.
For a whole alfresco of around 30 m2, that puts most jobs somewhere between $2,500 and $4,000 in tiling alone, before any slab or landscaping work.
Why outdoor tiling costs more than indoor
Two things push the price up compared with a standard indoor floor: the tiles themselves, and the way they have to be laid.
Slip-rated, external-grade tiles
An outdoor tile is not just an indoor tile used outside. It has to be:
- Slip-rated (typically P4 or P5) so it stays safe when wet, which matters most around pools and shaded alfresco areas that dry slowly.
- Frost and heat resistant so it does not crack through an Adelaide summer or the cold snaps we get in the Hills.
- Low porosity so it does not soak up water, stain or grow slippery mould.

Falls, drainage and thicker beds
Outdoor tiling has to shed water, not hold it. A good tiler builds a slight fall (usually around 1 in 100) away from the house and towards drains, which takes time and skill to get right. External work also uses flexible, weatherproof adhesive and often a thicker bed to cope with movement in the slab as it heats and cools.
That extra labour is exactly what you are paying for, and it is why a suspiciously cheap quote is a warning sign rather than a bargain.
Pool areas cost more again
Pool tiling is its own category. Waterline tiles, coping and the pool interior all sit permanently in or near chlorinated water, so they need specialist tiles, epoxy grout and a very high standard of waterproofing. That pushes both materials and labour above a standard patio.

What else affects your final price
Beyond the tile and the laying, a few things move the number on any outdoor job:
- The surface underneath. A new, level concrete slab is cheapest to tile. An old, cracked or uneven slab may need levelling ($25 to $50 per m2) or repair first.
- Waterproofing. Raised alfresco areas, balconies and anything over a habitable space below must be waterproofed to Australian Standards, usually $500 to $1,500 for the wet area.
- Tile size and layout. Large-format tiles look great and are popular for alfresco and patio designs, but they need a flatter substrate and more careful setting, which adds labour.
- Access and site conditions. A tight side gate, a steep block or a long carry from the street all add time to the job.
- Removal of old paving. Lifting existing pavers or tiles typically runs $20 to $40 per m2 and is sometimes overlooked in cheaper quotes.
Why the cheapest outdoor quote is rarely the best
An outdoor quote well below the others usually means corners cut where you cannot see them: a non-rated tile that goes slippery, no proper falls so water pools against the house, or skipped waterproofing on a raised deck.
