How adhesive use is worked out

Adhesive coverage depends mostly on the notch trowel and bed thickness, which in turn depends on tile size. Small tiles use a thin bed, standard tiles a medium bed, and large-format tiles a thick bed to fill the back fully and avoid voids.

We apply the typical coverage rate for each bed thickness and add a 10% contingency, because nobody wants to run out of adhesive halfway across a floor.

  • Thin bed (3-4 mm): around 2.5 kg per m2, for small tiles and mosaics
  • Medium bed (6 mm): around 4 kg per m2, for standard tiles
  • Thick bed (10 mm): around 6.5 kg per m2, for large-format and uneven surfaces

How grout use is worked out

Grout quantity comes down to how much joint there is to fill. Smaller tiles have more joints per square metre, so they use more grout, while large tiles with narrow joints use very little.

The estimate uses the standard industry formula based on your tile size, joint width and tile thickness, then shows a small range because grout mixing and waste vary in practice.

Frequently asked questions

Are these figures exact?
No, they are planning estimates. Real usage varies with the substrate, the trowel, how flat the wall or floor is and the tiler technique. Buy a little extra rather than run short mid-job.
What bed thickness should I choose?
Match it to your tile. Small mosaics and 100-200 mm tiles use a thin bed, standard 300 mm tiles a medium bed, and 600 mm and larger tiles a thick bed so the back is fully supported.
Does grout come in different bag sizes?
Yes, grout is sold in various bag sizes depending on the brand. Use the kilogram estimate to work out how many bags of your chosen product to buy.
Would a tiler supply the materials?
Usually yes. Get free quotes and a vetted Adelaide tiler will include the adhesive, grout and any primers or membranes in their supply-and-lay price.
