Why wastage matters

You never buy the exact floor area in tiles. Cuts around edges, mistakes, breakages and future repairs all mean you need extra, and that buffer is the wastage allowance.

For a simple straight lay, 10% is standard. Diagonal or patterned layouts waste more, so allow 15%. Lots of cuts, small rooms or natural stone with colour variation can need 20%.

  • 20% for lots of cuts, small rooms or natural stone
  • Always keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs

Buy from one batch

Tiles are made in batches and the colour can vary slightly between them. Ordering all your tiles, plus spares, in one go from the same batch avoids a visible mismatch later.

If you would rather have a professional measure up and handle the ordering, we can connect you with vetted Adelaide tilers who will quote the supply and lay for you.

Frequently asked questions

How many spare tiles should I keep?
Keep at least a full box, or around 5% of the job, stored somewhere dry. If a tile cracks or lifts years later, a matching spare from the same batch saves a frustrating hunt for a discontinued tile.
Should I measure in metres or millimetres?
Enter your area in square metres and your tile size in millimetres (the size printed on the box). The calculator converts everything for you.
Does this account for the grout gaps?
Grout joints are small enough that including them would slightly reduce the tile count, so leaving them out builds in a tiny extra safety margin on top of your wastage allowance.
Can a tiler measure up for me?
Yes. Get free quotes and a vetted Adelaide tiler will measure the area properly, allow for the layout and quote the tiles and labour together.
