Movement joints: the detail that stops cracking
This is the part that separates a floor that lasts from one that fails. When a heated floor warms up and cools down, the tile, the adhesive and the substrate all expand and contract very slightly. Over a large area, or across a doorway, that movement has to go somewhere.
Movement joints (also called expansion joints) are deliberate flexible gaps that let the floor move without stress building up under the tiles. On a heated floor they are not optional. A tiler laying a heated floor should:
- Include perimeter movement joints where the floor meets walls, so the field of tiles can expand.
- Add intermediate movement joints across larger areas, typically dividing the floor into manageable sections.

Curing and switching on: the mistake to avoid
Here is a mistake that catches people out, and it is worth knowing before you sign off on the job. A heated floor should not be switched on the moment the last tile is laid.
The adhesive and grout need time to cure fully first, usually a few days at minimum depending on the products used. Firing up the heat too early drives moisture out too fast, weakens the bond and can crack the tiles.
